Pediatric Toxicology Webinar

This lecture provides EMS providers with a focused overview of common and highrisk pediatric toxic exposures, emphasizing rapid recognition and early field management. Participants will review agespecific physiology, toxicologic red flags, and presenting patterns of ingestions involving medications, household chemicals, plants, and illicit substances. The session highlights practical assessment strategies, stabilization priorities, decontamination considerations, and communication with poison centers to enhance outcomes in pediatric overdose and poisoning emergencies.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify common pediatric toxic exposures and the agerelated factors that increase vulnerability to poisoning.

  • Recognize key signs and symptoms associated with major pediatric toxidromes and potentially lifethreatening ingestions.

  • Perform a focused assessment and formulate an early management plan tailored to pediatric patients with suspected toxic exposure. Discuss the ABCDEs of tox emergency responses

  • Apply safe and appropriate prehospital interventions, including airway management, supportive care, and decontamination when indicated.

  • Communicate effectively with caregivers, poison control centers, and receiving facilities to support timely and coordinated care.

  • Differentiate between benign ingestions and highrisk substances requiring emergent transport or specific antidotal therapy.

  • Discuss the ABCDEs of tox emergency responses
