This lecture provides an overview of acute and chronic heart failure, including underlying pathophysiology, common triggers, and clinical presentations. Participants will learn evidence-based prehospital assessment strategies, key diagnostic indicators, and current treatment approaches to optimize patient outcomes. Emphasis is placed on early recognition, risk stratification, and EMS-specific interventions to improve care in the field.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the pathophysiology of acute and chronic heart failure, including preload/afterload alterations and compensatory mechanisms.

  • Recognize signs of cardiogenic shock and respiratory compromise requiring immediate intervention.

  • Apply evidence‑based prehospital management strategies, including oxygenation, ventilation support (e.g., CPAP), nitroglycerin considerations, and fluid management principles.

  • Identify the importance of “Door to Diruetics “for the acute heart failure patient
