Medical Legal Issues in EMS
This class will cover a variety of EMS issues such as legal lability, consent, scope of practice, governmental immunity, reporting requirements, confidentiality, how to determine mental competence, advanced directives, EMTALA, and HIPPA.

By the end of this class the student will be able to:
1. state what is a reportable offense of abuse?
2. Define negligence, malfeasance.
3. Define governmental immunity.
4. Define confidentiality and how it applies to EMS
5. Define the various types of consent and give an example of each.
6. Determine if a patient is mentally competent to grant or refuse treatment.
7. Describe how a patient is placed on a mental health hold.
8. Define the various advanced directives and give an example of how each can be applied.
9. Define EMTALA and how it applies to EMS.
10. Define HIPPA and how this applies to EMS.
