Prehospital Blood Administration with SMFR Webinar

This lecture provides EMS clinicians with a comprehensive overview of the concepts, science, and operational considerations involved in administering blood products in the prehospital environment. As early whole blood and component therapy becomes increasingly available to out-of-hospital systems, EMS providers play a critical role in recognizing hemorrhagic shock, initiating timely resuscitation, and ensuring safe handling and delivery of blood products.

Participants will explore the pathophysiology of traumatic and medical hemorrhage, the rationale behind balanced blood product resuscitation, and the evidence supporting early transfusion in improving patient outcomes. The session will cover indications, contraindications, and decision-making frameworks for field transfusion; storage, transport, and accountability of blood products; and step-by-step administration procedures including equipment setup, infusion techniques, and patient monitoring.

Safety will be emphasized throughout, including recognition and management of transfusion reactions, documentation requirements, communication with receiving facilities, and adherence to local protocols, medical direction, and regulatory guidelines. Case studies and real-world examples from the South Metro Fire Rescue experience  will illustrate best practices and operational challenges faced by EMS crews deploying blood products in varied settings.

This training is designed for EMTs, paramedics, critical care providers, and EMS leaders seeking to enhance their competence and confidence in delivering early, lifesaving transfusion therapy in the prehospital phase of care.
